My Thomson trip to Tunisia Review

Thomson trip to Tunisia, staying in Marhaba Palace Review

As many of you know I have been back from holiday in Tunisia with Thomson a little over a week now, and the reason for a lack of posts and updates is because I spent about half of last week writing a complaint letter. I just want to say to everyone out there that may be Googling this place to go onto holiday there, that, Tunisia is a really nice place providing you are told real facts about it when you purchase the holiday, and that the hotel is of a good quality. Here is a much much shortened version of the issues we had whilst there, and the lies we were fed during the Thomson trip to Tunisia.

First I will start with the pure amount of crap we were told in the store by the untrained, and quite frankly lying woman in the Thomson store in Leicester city centre, BE WARNED she will tell you anything in order to make the sale to you, no matter how much she infringes upon on trade and sales laws doing so:

  1. Promised a double bed despite the hotel she sent us to not having ANY rooms with double beds.
  2. Said the hotel we were going to was lively and popular with our age, if she checked online reviews she would know old people love the hotel and young hate it.
  3. Promised us quality scuba opportunities - this was important to us as we were looking for a cheaper replacement of Egypt, there is nothing off the cost of Tunisia.
  4. Said we could take a day trip to the Sahara as we were close, and the hotel would pack food if we would miss a meal as we were full board, the truth is the marhaba palace staff actually laughed when we requested this and the Sahara desert was 8 hours drive away, I don't see how that would ever happen.
  5. She said the average price of a pint was about £1-£1.50 it was a minimum £3.00, naive maybe but we put our trust in a Thomson service representative who is supposed to be trained about these things.
  6. Promised a free drink with every meal on full board, this was a lie, and as above the drinks were twice as expensive as expected so this was a huge blow to our spending money.

Other dissapointing facts about our horrible holiday to Thomson holiday to The Marhaba Palace, Port El Kantaoui, Tunisia:

  1. All excursions are mis-sold, poor quality, not as the brochure says and massively over-priced.
  2. If you go on any excursions which are not a few hours then the food you will be given will be: Undercooked rice with a bit of veg in, "Brick" (a Tunisian delicacy), and probably water melon. As we did a 2 day trip we had this meal 5 times. It is not nutritious, and considering we paid more than we did for the hotel for the excursion the food quality was lacking and unvaried.
  3. The beach was filthy, no attempt has been made to clean it.
  4. The hotel is run-down and dirty, to give comparison it is like going to an old 80's travelodge with the floral patterns, broken chairs and equipment.
  5. Our room was disgusting, un cleaned and had no main light (apparently this was standard for the hotel) and was 2 single beds.

If you are going to or have gone to either the hotel or the Thomson shop in Leicester then please feel free to leave a comment or contact me

She even insisted all this was true because "her sister had been to Tunisia recently" I hope this opens peoples eyes to what can really happen even when paying for something thats supposed to be a reputable product from a reputable company such as Thomson Holidays.

I have recently posted more on my horrible Thomson holiday to Tunisia - The excursions.

Additionally I would love to hear more about how people think Thomson can improve their customer services more.

Has anyone else been sold an excursion in Tunisia being told all food and drink is included only to find that amounts to a single bottle of water on a 12 hour trip?

Quoting W.G.Bell:
This is to Paula been flying 40 years now 3 times a year to daughters Sweden and 2-3 holidays as well 2 retired pensioners do you think we are daft everyone was cmplaining about being charged over weight my wife can't carry hand luggage and it was the Maharaba
Sousse and we were only 26 kg with presants coming home and 2 small H/Luggage but to weigh my wifes walking stick thats a bit much I think I have had a bit more experience flying than you

How ignorant "I think I have had a bit more experience flying than you" - what a ridiculous thing to say! I always check before I fly regarding luggage allowance etc - I may not be as experienced but I am certainly more responsible and organised. I agree that weighing a walking stick is ridiculous but with regards to bringing home presents etc, make sure they are worth paying extra for over weight luggage for.

hi andy and all
start with weight issues every airline have different amounts so how can the traveller expect to get it right everytime, some low cost lines say we can take 15kg's at tops and others say 20kg's.
i prepaid for extra luggage as i always do and when i got to the airport at both ends they told me that what i paid was only for 1 way even after showing them the printout from the airline stating that i had paid for 10kg's extra they said well thats only 5kg's each way, that was it all i saw was red.
but after calling the airline they did see there error in what they told me at the airport and by way of a sorry i got £15 worth of food/drinks vouchers so all good me thinks.
always challenge them at the airport when you check in if this happens to you and if you prepaid for extra before your flight

Well Andy I would say that you didnt do your research very well! If you are going to spend money on a holiday that you have saved long and hard for at least take a couple of days to check everything out. Caveat Emptor and all that. Never ever trust anyone selling anything. Check it out man, check it out.
For your info I was in PEK in March with my partner and we did check it out> What we got was a great hotel (RIU Imperial Marhaba--very good as all RIU hotels are)
but everything else was a bin and a bit of a shock to our system too. Filthy beach, aggressiv e disenchanted young men, constantly pestered by everyone, and nothing to do.
Excursions overpriced and poor and even the weather was pants. We wont be back but I cannot deny that people have their favourite destinations. Tunisia is not mine and never will be.
Next time you are in a Travel Agent ask to see the gazeteer. Its the trade warts and all bible about all the hotels and you can decide whats for you.

Hi Everyone,

Thankyou very much for your supporting comments, and in some cases constructive criticism.

I would like to say I don't claim to be the most hard-done-by traveller, but I was mis-sold and companies need to realise they can't get away with it.

Additionally for the people who were interested in how to run their own blog I have actually written a blog post for people interested in taking a similiar approach, however, I need to write another about how to use social media (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace etc).

The link to this is: www.udjamaflip.com/php/46-how-to-setup-a-blog.html

What you might also find helpful is an article I wrote about the benefits of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and how to make your website more SEO friendly. It's a little advanced but some parts may help. www.udjamaflip.com/general-development/47-beginners-guide-to-search-engine-optimisation.html

Any questions at all just give me an email here: www.udjamaflip.com/contact-andy-sharman.html

Kind Regards,

Andy

Oh my god Andy! Exactly the same experience as us but ours was our honeymoon at Sahara Beach Hotel. Very dated, very poor hygiene, rooms terrible, fly invested flea pit(and thats not half of it)! We are still fighting our case after becoming ill at Sahara Beach Hotel and this was 4 years ago. Please no one book its disgusting!! As for the Thomson Reps, well what can i say! You let them off lightly Andy!

Good luck for future holidays!

I am surprised that people keep saying that Andy's experience was not that bad, get over it. This is not the point. When you pay a large sum of money for what you are sold as being a perfect/wonderful holiday, you have every right to complain when it turns out the salesperson is not being truthful. Sheree's experience is also all too common - these companies claim that once booked there is nothing they can do, "my hands are tied". This is also utter nonsense. They can easily rebook, but they chose not to. I once had to pay Thomas Cook to rebook my flights, that they had got wrong. It cost me about £100 to fix their error. They refused to rebook my flights, claiming that I must have given them the wrong dates. That was about 10 years ago and I vowed to never use a travel agent again, and still have not. I go direct to airlines and hotels for all my bookings now.
